June with her Bougainvillea Vase created from pruning

Every year for the last 15 years I have been to June’s garden to spruce it up. I prune, I plant, I compost, I feed and I propagate new plants from cuttings and most of all I make a floral display for the counter.   Gardening is a past time that June has enjoyed all her magnificent 89 years.

June's pretty no nonsense garden

June still does pottery and makes  her own pots. Look at the lovely display.

Dietes Grandiflora

Dietes Grandiflora

  • Brigid Taylor Jackson I always know that when they flower in profusion that there is a certainty of rain… always make the garden so cheerful, very clever indeed

  • Herman van Bon Same with the San Pedro cactus. When this cactus starts to flower you can be sure of rain within 5 days…

  • Brigid Taylor Jackson love them too

  • Craig Wright OK, so bear with me here, but I do think that Dietes is one of the plants that is a junction between the heavens and earth. I always feel it is lightly touched by the cosmic, like the picture of a host of butterflies that gently landed on some green leaves. Dietes mean ‘two affinities’ and I think that this openness and sensitivity to atmospheric changes is an illustration of this. Thanks for the rain reminder Brigid.

  • Brigid Taylor Jackson I quite agree with you Craig, as yes they do look like butterflies which have been touched by the cosmic, could also be the perfect balance between the masculine and feminine… yes Craig we need the rain!! Will be nice and cooling

  • Craig Wright they are supposed to be midway between the irises and the moraeas – possible closer to their actual ancestor – i like this idea of bridging the gap between two things, so yes, perhaps between masculine and feminine – look how masculine the green part of the plant is and how delicate and feminine the flower is…

  • Brigid Taylor Jackson Thank you Craig, , yes they are always mid-way. Yes the colour is very male and female…

  • Kris Foster-Phipps I love it because when you are in full bloom, I am in the cold and visa versa…we keep each other in perpetual spring!!!

Six years ago I was called into this garden to create a feature garden out of barren ground. We created the water feature and gravelled the vast majority of it. Recently a Ficus in the garden had to be removed which upset the now mature garden. My client was very thrifty in saving all her plants by potting them up. As you can imagine there was a huge mess after the tree had been removed.

The new detail was to remove the gravel , rearrange the pavers and plant up with Buffalo lawn plugs all 25000 of them.

Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is acclaimed as one of the great botanic gardens of the world. Few gardens can match the sheer grandeur of the setting of Kirstenbosch, against the eastern slopes of Cape Town’s Table Mountain.

The 36 hectare garden is part of a 528 hectare estate that contains protected mountainside supporting natural forest and fynbos along with a variety of animals and birds.

Kirstenbosch lies in the heart of the Cape Floristic Region, also known as the Cape Floral Kingdom. In 2004 the Cape Floristic Region, including Kirstenbosch, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site – another first for Kirstenbosch, it is the first botanic garden in the world to be included within a natural World Heritage Site.

Kirstenbosch – The most beautiful garden in Africa.

There are a few wonderful gardeners where I live. One such gardener is Maxi Burger. Maxi took over this verge a few years ago and has turned it into something we can be proud of. Her hard work is evident, with the wonderful display that greets residents and passers-by.

This sculpture was made by George Fairhurst as a challenge to see what could be moved using hemp rope. You can make this very tall steel sculpture rock backwards and forwards if you pull on the rope attached.
