Chili peppers have been a part of the human diet in the Americas since at least 7500 BC. There is archaeological evidence at sites located in southwestern Ecuador that chili peppers were domesticated more than 6000 years ago,and were one of the first self-pollinating crops cultivated in Central and South America

Christopher Columbus was one of the first Europeans to encounter them (in the Caribbean), and called them “peppers” because they, like black and white pepper of the Piper genus known in Europe, have a spicy hot taste unlike other foodstuffs. Upon their introduction into Europe, chilis were grown as botanical curiosities in the gardens of Spanish and Portuguese monasteries. But the monks experimented with the chili culinary potential and discovered that their pungency offered a substitute for black peppercorns, which at the time were so costly that they were used as legal currency in some countries.

The Scoville Scale

The most common way to evaluate chile pungency is a simple taste test. This method, although quick and cost-effective, may leave the tester in some pain: one would be happy to “let Mikey eat it.” There are two other ways of testing pungency as well, the Scoville organoleptic test and high performance liquid chromatography.

  • Mild Heat: 0 to 5,000 SHUs
  • Medium Heat: 5,000 to 20,000 SHUs
  • Hot Heat: 20,000  to 70,000 SHUs
  • Extreme Heat: 70,000 to 30,000 SHUs*

*In recent years, new varieties have been discovered that far exceed 30,000 SHUs. The world’s hottest chile, the bhut jolokia from India, has been measured at 1 million SHUs.

brewing is an old art

Ale is one of the oldest beverages humans have produced, dating back to at least the 5th millennium BC and recorded in the written history of Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia

Hops (Humulus luplus)
  • Hops can be grown in different ways: on hop hills (on 10-foot tall posts in a mound of compost) up sisal strings suspended from wires attached to chestnut posts trained by ‘butchers’ and ‘umbrella’ and ‘Worcester’ methods. Hop workers used to wear stilts to sort the wires out.
  • Hops are susceptible to several pests and diseases and often require spraying.

“Hemp is of first necessity to the wealth & protection of the country.”

“Why use up the forests which were centuries in the making and the mines which required ages to lay down, if we can get the equivalent of forest and mineral products in the annual growth of the hemp fields?”
–  Henry Ford

The illegality of cannabis is outrageous, an impediment to full utilization of a drug which helps produce the serenity and insight, sensitivity and fellowship so desperately needed in this increasingly mad and dangerous world.”
–  Carl Sagan

“If John Lennon is deported, I’m leaving too…with my musicians..and my marijuana.”
– Art Garfunkel

– Arnold Schwarzenegger

“When I was a kid I inhaled frequently. That was the point.”
– Barack Obama, U.S. President

“When a private enterprise fails, it is closed down; when a government enterprise fails, it is expanded. Isn’t that exactly what’s been happening with drugs?”
– Milton Friedman

Facts

  • Hemp grows fast, is very adaptable to soil and climatic conditions and is undemanding on resources such as artificial fertilisers and pesticides. It provides a good break crop for the farmer, giving the land a rest from other crops and helping to prevent disease.
  • It is a potential flagship sustainable crop for the 21st century, but there’s a reason why our fields aren’t full of it. It produces a substance that became socially controversial in the early part of the 20th century: tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which as well as having many medicinal attributes has been used as a recreational drug. In recent years breeding and selection has resulted in cultivars low in THC, and hemp is once again being considered by governments as a useful crop.
  • One of the oldest relics of human industry is a bit of hemp fabric dating back to approximately 8,000 BC.
  • Hemp is six times as strong as cotton, much more resistant to weathering and wear, and more lustrous and absorbent. It is also much more environmentally friendly to grow.
  • Hemp growing became commonplace in Britain under the Romans and continued into the mid-1940s. In the 16th century Henry VIII made hemp cultivation obligatory.

The Rain-forest Balloon

The Rain-forest Balloon is a research tool invented by scientists for safe, non-destructive access to the rainforest canopy. Since 1999 it has been used in Gabon, Madagascar, Panama and French Guyana also at Eden during 2004 and 2005.

What is it?

The Balloon is filled with helium and has a harness to carry one person. It slides along a rope, which can be run at any angle through the canopy, or used with a ground based winch for vertical access.

The passenger moves through the canopy by pulling him or herself along the rope by hand, so it is possible to stop from time to time in order to conduct the desired experiments (observations, sampling, setting insect traps, and conducting analyses, filming or taking photographs) through a simple man-oeuvre.
