After the devastating fires we had in Simon’s Town last year, it is now time to become an Eco-Warrior! The Port Jackson is pushing up everywhere and will create a potential fire hazard, not to mention it smothering all the Fynbos, with is starting to rehabilitate.

Here is an interesting article written by Kay Montgomery, published in the Argus on 1 October.

Fountain Grass

Fountaingrass has been introduced to Tenerife,Sicily, Sardinia, southern Spain, Australia, South Africa, Hawaii, the Western United States, California, and southern Florida. It thrives in warmer, drier areas and threatens many native species, with which it competes very effectively as an invasive species. It also tends to increase the risk of intense wildfires, to which it is well adapted, thus posing a further threat to certain native species. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pennisetum_setaceum

Centranthus ruber is commonly known as Red Valarian, Kiss-me-over-the-garden-gate or Devil’s Beard.

It is a problem as it rapidly spreads out of gardens. It competes with Fynbos and other indigenous plants. It can also form dense vegetative stands. It invades wetlands. Insects may neglect pollinating indigenous flowers in preference for this one. It is spread by prolific seed production
